BEJA, Portugal -- The 48th Fighter Wing's F-35A Lightning IIs recently made a historic visit to take part in the Beja International Airshow.

This marked the first time these fighter jets landed on mainland Portuguese soil, underscoring the deepening defense relationship between the U.S. and Portugal.

The event was part of an airshow that saw the arrival of not just the cutting-edge aircraft, but also a delegation from RAF Lakenheath, including pilots, maintainers, and security forces members. Their presence highlighted the collaborative spirit and operational readiness of the U.S. Air Force and its NATO allies.

The Third Air Force commander, U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Paul Moga emphasized the importance of such exchanges in strengthening military ties and interoperability. The commander’s presence underscored the strategic significance of the F-35 deployment and the broader commitment to ensuring security and stability in the region.

The F-35 Lightning II, renowned for its lethality and survivability, is a cornerstone of modern airpower. By bringing these aircraft to Beja, the U.S. Air Force showcased the jet’s stealth capabilities, advanced integrated avionics and multi-role versatility up close and on the ground to visitors through a static display.

For the Portuguese public and joint military personnel, the presence of the F-35s on the Beja tarmac was a unique opportunity to witness the forefront of aviation technology. Portuguese pilots and engineers engaged directly with their American counterparts, exchanging knowledge and experiences that are crucial for future collaborative efforts.

“The visit not only demonstrated the operational capabilities of the F-35 but also served as a platform for enhancing mutual understanding and cooperation between the U.S. and Portuguese air forces,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Grant “Shooter” Saum, 493rd Fighter Squadron commander. “The event was a clear signal of the shared dedication to advancing defense technologies and ensuring foreign partners and NATO security.”
