The South Pacific Warriors of Korea performed at the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys Directorate of Public Works organizational day at the Camp Humphreys’ Freedom Field, May 24, 2024, in celebration of the Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month.

More than 400 DPW employees gathered for their organizational day, with the aim of enjoying the annual celebration of the Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month and building camaraderie among the employees. Barbecue smells, games, music, laughs, and conversations filled Freedom Field where they awaited the South Pacific Warriors of Korea dance team to arrive.

The dance team consists of more than 20 Soldiers and family members of Camp Humphreys. For the past few years, they been performed Samoan, Hawaiian, Tongan, and Tahiti dances around Camp Humphreys and within the local community, sharing the Pacific Island cultures.

“One of our employees has seen the South Pacific Warriors’ performances in the past, and we wanted to include something that’s significant and meaningful and see what the Asian Pacific culture has to offer,” said John Ghim, the Directorate of Public Works director. “It’s especially nice for our Korean employees to see these cultural dances. Even though they are Asian, many haven’t experienced the Polynesian Pacific Region cultures a lot.”

SSG Liulagi Ilaoa, the leader of the dance team, shared the pride the team feels in sharing the rich culture of their heritage and their home with others who may not normally be exposed to it.

“I’m glad we are here to showcase our cultural dances, especially my home island Samoa,” said Ilaoa. “I am always proud to represent the Samoan and South Pacific Island cultures. Our crew took their time of their schedule to volunteer to share their culture within the Army.”

The South Pacific Warriors of Korea became registered as a private organization within the U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys last May so that they can share their cultures within the community and continue to promote the diversity within the Army.
