JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- Doyon Utilities and the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson 673d Civil Engineer Group hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new water-treatment plant in Anchorage, Alaska, June 12, 2024.

JBER leaders and project leads broke dirt at the construction site to symbolize the beginning of the project, while service members and civilians gathered to celebrate.

“The new facility will incorporate modern treatment technology and allow for growth and increased peak demand,” said Virginia Supanick, the administrative manager for Doyon Utilities.

The current water treatment plant was built in 1957 and has been providing clean water to the installation for nearly 67 years. Doyon began working on the process to open up the new plant in 2017, and in early 2024 they received the proper permits and approvals to do so.

“This current plant has done a great job at providing us with water, but there’s no telling how much longer it will last,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Jeremy Oldham, 673d CEG commander. “It’s good to recapitalize our infrastructure to supply the installation with reliable and resilient water sources.”

The new water treatment plan is slated to open in the fall of 2025.
