NAS JRB FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- On Tuesday June 11, 2024, screen legend Kevin Costner visited Naval Air Station (NAS) Joint Reserve Base (JRB) Fort Worth to promote his new movie, ‘Horizon: An American Saga.’ Costner, his team from Warner Brothers and NAS JRB Fort Worth Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) provided an opportunity for service members, veterans and their families to attend an advance screening of his movie along with a special appearance by Costner himself.
Before the movie screening, NAS JRB Fort Worth Commanding Officer Capt. Beau Hufstetler sat down with Costner for a Q & A while the audience observed. This provided a unique and intimate setting for those in attendance.

Hufstetler introduced Costner to the stage saying, “It’s such an honor having a legend of film here at NAS JRB Fort Worth with over four decades in this industry, two Academy Awards and a hero on the movie screen.”

After Costner sat down, he shared, “It’s very important to be able to share this movie with military members. I’ve been able to play a military guy in many movies, but I want you to know that I never think I’m you, ever. You are the heroes in real life. I’m proud to bring my movie to the military to honor you.”

When asked what inspired this movie, Costner said, “I had an idea in 1988 and a script eventually came out of it. I wanted to tell a story about a land where there wasn’t a stake. When we first planted towns in the United States, it disrupted the lives of people who had been there for thousands of years. It turned their lives upside down. Most movies show towns that have already been there, I wanted this one to tell the story of how towns came to be and what happens in that process.” Costner continued, “I took a big risk making this movie. Nobody wanted to fund it, so I did. I’m a dreamer, a risk taker. I don’t want to be defined by the things I earn or own. I’m happy I served my dream.”

Hufstetler discussed how having a purpose and deeper meaning is important in life, “There’s a beauty in having a long career, whether it’s the military or a lot of other occupations. The longer that you spend in your career and the people you care about, the longer you get to go through these troughs and high points of the tough things and the beauty of things. If you can connect your purpose and the reason why you do things, whether it’s to defend this great nation or take care of your brother/sister next to you, it means something. The longer that you’re in the business, the longer that you’re out there taking care of people, the more meaningful it becomes.”

Costner’s favorite part of making this movie was spending time with his son. His kids have never been in part of this business before. “I love what I do but it doesn’t define me. I’m a father, a friend.”
“I will be ok if things don’t work out because I’ve done what I love to do,” Costner affirmed. “I wanted to infuse classic and moments that you’ll never forget into this movie. I dreamed it, no one would make it, so I did. And now it’s done.”

NAS JRB Fort Worth is the first and finest joint reserve base, known for training and equipping air crews and aviation ground support personnel, while supporting missions such as airlift, aerial refueling, and global mobility, making it an integral part of national defense infrastructure.
