FORT DRUM, N.Y. (June 21, 2024) – Soldiers and civilians across the 10th Mountain Division (LI) attended the 10th Mountain Division Artillery Change of Command, on June 21, 2024, on Sexton Field, Fort Drum.
The ceremony began with a howitzer fired by Col. Thomas Goettke, for the last time as DIVARTY commander.
After the blast of the howitzer, Goettke’s wife, Heather, and mother, Annie, each were presented with a bouquet of red roses, signifying the farewell of a person with love and appreciation for their contributions during their time with DIVARTY.
Col. Michael Tumlin, incoming commander of DIVARTY, sat nearby with his family during the opening remarks. Tumlin’s wife, Sara, received a bouquet of yellow roses, the color of new beginnings, welcoming them to the 10th Mountain Division (LI).
Following the presentation of gifts, the passing of the unit colors began, symbolizing the transfer of command responsibility and authority.
The time-honored tradition began with Command Sgt. Maj. Freddie Thompson IV, senior DIVARTY senior enlisted advisor, passing the colors to Goettke, who handed them to Maj. Gen. Scott Naumann, 10th Mountain Division (LI) and Fort Drum commander, signifying the relinquishment of his command.
The colors were then passed to Tumlin, charging him with the responsibilities and authority to command DIVARTY.
Next, speeches were given by Naumann, Goettke, and Tumlin.
Goettke gave final remarks during his speech, sharing words of advice to the formation.
“To the Soldiers of Divison Artillery, here are a few final coaching points: you either get better or worse every day; whether training, in the motor pool, or MTC,” Goettke said. “You will never regret giving your best effort or being a great teammate.”
Tumlin then spoke about his gratitude to the DIVARTY Soldiers and leaders.
“I am humbled and honored for the opportunity to command this legendary Divison Artillery,” Tumlin said. “Thank you for your trust and confidence in my abilities to do so.”
After the speeches, Soldiers in the formation conducted a “Pass in Review,” where the unit marched past a reviewing officer to be inspected on their presence and discipline, effectively ending the ceremony.
“I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division standing on the field today; you embody the best of what our nation has to offer and I consider it my great honor to join your ranks today,” Tumlin said. “I look forward to serving alongside you and continuing to pursue our tradition of excellence together!”
