REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command focused on the safety of its team members during its annual Safety Awareness Day, June 25, at the command’s Redstone Arsenal headquarters.
The purpose of the event is to promote safety awareness; to minimize the risk of unintentional death, injury or damage caused by mishaps; promote proactive safety measures within the command elements in Huntsville and recognize June as National Safety Month.
“Warm weather and higher temperatures mean increased outdoor recreational activities, home maintenance projects and summer travel,” said Randy Joyner, USASMDC Command Safety Office director. “In today's world, distractions and multitasking are common place and it is vital that we ensure hazards are evaluated to mitigate the risks to ourselves and our families. It is vital that we remain cognizant of our surroundings along with the associated hazards to prevent accidental mishaps.
“It is our hope that personnel will leave today's event with an appreciation of how safety should be perceived, valued and prioritized,” he added. “This is an integral part of developing a valued safety culture at work and home. SMDC leadership is committed to the safety and health of all of our employees and family members.”
USASMDC commitment to employee safety and health was highlighted by bringing in local vendors to demonstrate and promote safety awareness.
Bobby Taylor, USASMDC safety manager, said it only takes a second to have an accident that could have easily been prevented with simple awareness. He added the vendors provided information to the workforce that is applicable inside and outside of the workplace.
“SMDC Safety Day is more than just an event, it’s about looking out for each other like family,” Taylor said. “We want to make sure every Soldier, civilian and contractor goes home safe and sound every single day. Staying informed and being proactive about safety is how we take care of our own. Together, we build a community that looks after each other, making sure everyone gets back to their loved ones safe and happy.
“In conjunction with National Safety Month, SMDC Safety Day proved to be an outstanding success, highlighting our ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of safety and health within our community,” he added. “The event drew a diverse crowd of Soldiers and civilians, all eager to engage with the various vendors and learn more about maintaining a safe and healthy lifestyle.”
USASMDC employees got a firsthand chance to learn about local safety and health issues unique to Alabama and the Tennessee Valley. Exhibits and safety demonstrations included: Redstone Arsenal Fire Department members instructing individuals on how to properly use fire extinguishers; Fox Army Health Center personnel providing nutritional and ergonomic tips as well as blood pressure screening; the Army Substance Abuse Program; Army Community Service’s Family Advocacy and Financial Readiness providing resources and programs available to support Soldiers and their families; and the Missile Defense Agency’s Fitness and Wellness Center representatives.
“The day featured an array of invaluable resources and services,” Taylor said. “Attendees received expert nutrition advice from a certified nutritionist, discovered ergonomic solutions to enhance workplace comfort, and had their blood pressure screened.
“Each of these components played a significant role in promoting overall well-being and safety, both at work and at home,” Taylor said. “The enthusiastic participation of our community members underscored the importance of such initiatives. By coming together for SMDC Safety Day, we took proactive steps to safeguard our community and enhance our quality of life, reaffirming our shared commitment to health and safety.”
