NAVAL AIR STATION SIGONELLA, Sicily (June 28, 2024) – After dedicating nearly half a century of service to Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Sicily, Pietro Migliorini is slated to retire with 44 years of service to the U.S. government, June 29, 2024.

“On behalf of NCTS, I’d like to thank Signore Migliorini for his 44 years of unwavering service and devotion to the United States Navy and to Naval Air Station [NAS] Sigonella,” said Lt. j.g. Lucas Derry, acting director, NCTS base communications office. “He is one of the finest men I’ve ever worked with – we are saying goodbye to a wellspring of knowledge and expertise.”

Migliorini started his career in 1979, holds a master's degree in economics and commerce, and is a certified public consultant and auditor accredited in Italy.

He witnessed and adapted to countless changes in telecommunications and information technologies throughout the decades. He started his career with typewriters and cord board switches and experienced the arrival of the first computer at his office in the mid-eighties, a Commodore 64, which he programmed for billing purposes.

“He has been here since practically the inception of NCTS and has had a hand in its planning and implementation, including any work regarding the installation’s phone lines,” said Derry. “His adaptability to changing technologies throughout the past 44 years has been monumental to the success of NCTS.”

During his tenure, the NCTS Sicily base communications office achieved numerous significant accomplishments, including implementing the first centralized operator service for all Navy installations in Italy, the first mobile services at a Navy base in Europe, and the first Navy IP (Internet Protocol) network in Europe. NCTS also implemented various Ethernet connectivity and was one of the first installations to implement Voice Over Internet Protocol and Internet Protocol television, establish a business model for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line services, and implement more than 16 kilometers of Navy-owned Fiber Optic connectivity between the Sigonella NAS 1 and NAS 2 bases.

With Migliorini on the team, NCTS won eight Defense Information Systems Agency Outstanding Defense Information System Network (DISN) Facility of the Year Awards and eight DISN Facility of the Year Runner-Up Awards in the Category of Defense Switched Network End Office switches.

2024 marks NAS Sigonella’s 65th anniversary and Migliorini has been witness to Sigonella’s growth and historical impact as the “Hub of the Mediterranean” throughout the installation’s history.

Migliorini’s father served in the Italian Navy during WWII and worked on Naval Air Facility Sigonella when it first opened in 1959. Father and son also worked together for a time on the installation and have a combined service of more than six decades working with the U.S. government.

Speaking fondly of NCTS, Migliorini said he chose to dedicate his career to the command because it is a very unique job he always found to be extremely fulfilling.

“I am very happy with my retirement and newfound autonomy, but on the other hand, I am sad to be leaving,” said Migliorini. “NCTS has been my home for over 40 years, and it will be hard saying goodbye.”

Naval Air Station Sigonella provides consolidated operational, command and control, administrative, logistical, and advanced logistical support to the U.S. and other NATO forces. The installation’s strategic location enables U.S., allied, and partner nation forces to deploy and respond as required, ensuring security and stability in Europe, Africa, and Central Command.
