Marine Corps Security Force Battalion (MCSFBn), Kings Bay held a change of command ceremony at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia, June 20.
Lt. Col. Joseph E. Moeller relieved Col. Daniel L. Thunen as the battalion’s commander in a ceremony attended by the base’s tenant commanding officers, family, friends, and the nearly 1,100 Marines and Sailors assigned to the battalion.
“It takes ironclad discipline, engaged leadership, and a commitment to doing this job well every day,” said Thunen who assumed command of MCSFBn, Kings Bay in June 2022. “It’s a compelling mission that, as Capt. Hines puts it, gives the President of The United States options.”
MCSFBn serves as the security force that ensures the security and prevention of unauthorized access or loss of custody of strategic assets within Strategic Weapons Facility Atlantic’s (SWFLANT) Area of Operations at Kings Bay.
“The MCSFBn provides a 24/7/365 view of Navy-Marine Corps partnership ensuring the defense of our nation through the security of our most critical strategic assets,” said Vice Adm. Johnny Wolfe, Director, Strategic Systems Programs. “Like every other partnership that contributes to Strategic Systems Programs mission, MCSFBn is integral to our mission success.”
Moeller, the newly appointed commander, expressed gratitude and excitement to lead MCSFBn, and continuing the joint effort in safeguarding strategic assets with SWFLANT.
“I look forward to continuing and enhancing our partnership [with SWFLANT] over the next few years,” said Moeller. “Kings Bay’s security over strategic assets will maintain secure under my watch.”
SWFLANT provides strategic missiles and weapons system support to fleet ballistic missile submarines. Its mission is to safely and securely deliver the right missile, with the right payload, to the right tube, on the right submarine, for deployment of ballistic and guided missile submarines with ready and reliable weapons.
“It has been an honor to serve alongside Col. Thunen who has truly left a positive impact on the Marines and Sailors assigned to MCSFBn and Kings Bay,” said Capt. Juan Hines, SWFLANT’s commanding officer. “The mutual partnership between SWFLANT and MCSFBn--providing the production and security of Kings Bay’s ballistic and guided missile strategic assets, plays a crucial role in contributing to strategic deterrence, the Department of Defense’s primary mission. I look forward to our continued partnership under the leadership of Lt. Col. Moeller.
Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is homeport of all East coast Ohio-class submarines.
