SAN DIEGO -- Sailors assigned to Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego participated in a volunteer event organized by the IWTC San Diego Chief’s Mess and the USS Midway Museum, commemorating the Battle of Midway onboard USS Midway Museum on May 28, 2024.

IWTC San Diego Sailors engaged in an “All-Hands Field Day” onboard the USS Midway Museum. Field Day is a standard practice of maintenance aboard U.S. Vessels practiced to this day. USS Midway Museum staff praised the IWTC team’s beautification and restoration efforts and emphasized the importance of honoring past heroes through service to the community. This activity not only paid tribute to the historical significance of the Battle of Midway but also strengthened the bond between the Navy and the broader San Diego community.

Cryptologic Technician Collections Chief Marlena Peter said, “The purpose of this event was twofold - we connected Sailors to our heritage, especially during the 82nd year of commemoration of the Battle of Midway, and it helps Sailors see and feel the value in engaging in the community.”

The USS Midway Museum is a non-profit organization and America’s living symbol of Freedom. The museum honors the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought in the pivotal Battle of Midway during World War II, while fostering a spirit of service and community engagement among current Navy personnel. The Battle of Midway, which took place in June 1942, is celebrated as one of the most significant Naval victories in U.S. history. It marked a turning point in the Pacific Theater of World War II, highlighting the valor and strategic acumen of the U.S. Navy.

"Our Sailors connected with the legacy of the past century in such a simple way, but it is made so real to think about those who performed the same cleaning and maintenance functions changed their pivotal moments in history – and it could be us next time." said IWTC San Diego Executive Officer, Lieutenant Commander Michael Millar. Millar went on to state, “The event was a resounding success, demonstrating the Navy's ongoing commitment to service both on and off duty. Through their volunteer efforts, IWTC San Diego Sailors honored the memory of the Battle of Midway while embodying the spirit of service that defines the United States Navy."

IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT), provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.

With four schoolhouse commands, a detachment, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT trains approximately 26,000 students every year, delivering trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
