NORFOLK, Va. – Mid-Atlantic Regional Maintenance Center (MARMC) has selected the USS Ross (DDG 71) maintenance team to be spotlighted for the month of July, following their exceptional performance during the ship’s Extended Dry-Docking Selected Restricted Availability (EDSRA)!

The EDSRA, a comprehensive maintenance project conducted in dry-dock every 10 years for Destroyers (DDG), involves extensive hull, mechanical, and electrical work. The engineering team’s stellar collaboration and diverse backgrounds were key factors in their success.

“With the extensions we had within the NDE [Navy Database Environment] dates, we were in plant for roughly 20 months,” said Gill Powell, USS Ross project manager.

Powell commended the team’s cohesion, stating, “The MARMC team on Ross all come from diverse backgrounds and have worked with each other on multiple avails to the point we know each other well and we looked out for each other well…this is a leveraging factor in increasing efficiency for sure.”

He further emphasized the rewarding aspect of the team’s dynamic, saying, “The most rewarding aspect is feeling like we are all family and knowing that your teammates have you covered no matter what.”

One of the biggest challenges the team overcame was a $3.6 million replacement of a sonar dome rubber window.

“The replacement was a challenge, but we came through it,” added Powell. “We learned many things during this availability.”

Despite the numerous challenges faced during the project, Powell noted that the team’s established relationships helped them tackle issues head-on, making everything run much smoother.

The engineering team’s accomplishments on Ross are just one of the many projects they undertake annually. The team is now gearing up for three Continuous Maintenance Availabilities (CMAVs).

Project Support Engineer and the newest member on the Ross maintenance team, Robert Flagg, added, “I was in a privileged position to learn a little bit from everybody, all the hiccups we had, we learned to fight through it. Everybody came from a different way with all of their experiences and we found a way to make it happen.”

The Ross maintenance team’s exceptional work has significantly bolstered the overall mission readiness of the fleet. By meticulously executing the EDSRA, the team has ensured that Ross is now operating at peak performance levels.

“Without the maintenance team and what we do behind the scenes, the ship wouldn’t be where they are today,” Powell added.

With the successful completion Ross’ availability, the maintenance team is enthusiastic about the future challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in the coming months.

MARMC, a field activity under Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), provides surface ship maintenance, management and oversight of private-sector maintenance, and fleet technical assistance to ships in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States.
