MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. – The Chisholm Trail Inn Dining Facility ‘DFAC’ was awarded the 68th annual Air Force John L. Hennessy Award, beating 70 other facilities globally on May 17, 2024, in Chicago, Illinois.

The award recognizes excellence in food service throughout the entire Air Force and is a testament of the hard work from the civilian employees and Airmen of McConnell.

Since 1956, The Hennessy Trophy has been awarded annually to the Air Force DFAC scoring the highest on the point grading system. DFACS are judged based on several key areas including food service management, food quality, force readiness support, resource conservation, safety, and training.

Annually, the Chisholm Trail Inn provides healthy meal options to more than 193,000 customers with a workforce of 64 military and civilian personnel. The success they’ve seen can be attributed greatly to their hard working team.

“We fuel the Airmen that fuel the planes,” said Tech. Sgt. Rontera N. Powell, food service section chief. “I’m constantly mentoring my Airmen that, yes, our job is not always glamorous, and it is very taxing but our job is one of the most important parts to the mission in projecting air power.”

McConnell initially won the title of Region 1 East Finalist on March 4, 2024. Shortly after, five McConnell Airmen went to Chicago, where they attended food service expos, received restaurant industry training and were given the opportunity to network with leaders in the trillion-dollar food industry.

While in Chicago, The National Restaurant Association Conference hosted a dinner to recognize every base that won in their corresponding region.

“At that dinner, they announced to our team that we had the highest score out of all the winning bases,” Powell said. “Our leadership surprised the rest of the Airmen during the meeting Wednesday. They were shocked upon hearing the announcement as we had been holding the news for a while. Between the news and the standing ovation in the wing conference room, the Airmen were speechless at that point and grateful for the opportunity to be recognized and shown so much love that day.”

These dedicated McConnell Airmen played a pivotal role in taking home the trophy that is now displayed at the Chisholm Trail Inn DFAC for all its visitors to admire.
