TROY, New York – New York Army National Guard Lt. Col. Katie Schin, an Iraqi war veteran, took command of Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 42nd Infantry Division, during a ceremony at the division’s headquarters in Troy, N.Y., July 13, 2024.

Prior to the change of command ceremony, Schin was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel, with her husband Mike and two daughters Michaela and Evelyn assisting during the pinning ceremony. Schin served 11 years as an enlisted soldier, achieving the rank of sergeant first class before direct commissioning as an officer in 2009.

Schin was mobilized to Ground Zero following the attacks on the World Trade Center, and held significant duty assignments, including executive officer, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Region II Homeland Response Force; commander, Intelligence and Sustainment Company; human resources officer, 42nd Inf. Div.; executive officer, the Office of The Adjutant General; and deputy commander, Recruiting and Retention Battalion.

“Katie is an excellent leader and performed in key leadership positions which made her the right choice for this command,” said Maj. Gen. Joseph L. Biehler, commander of the 42nd Inf. Div.

Lt. Col. Bryon Linnehan, also an Iraqi war veteran, relinquished command of HHBN to Schin during the ceremony, a position he served in for more than three years.

Linnehan has served in multiple combat overseas tours in his career and as acting battalion commander for two warfighter exercises.

During his speech, Biehler’s said, “Linnehan and his Soldiers did a fabulous job last year during the division warfighter. Both officers are Iraq veterans. I look at those people who do those, they’re warfighting commands and warfighting deployments, and both of these officers have that experience.”
“You’re seeing a very great officer leaving and very great officer coming in, both very capable,” Biehler added. “These two officers are among the best and are two outstanding leaders”.

Schin, who started her military career 26 years ago as a private in 642nd Military Intelligence Battalion, says she “hopes it serves as an inspiration for some of the junior Soldiers standing in this formation; you could be standing here one day as well.”

“The division headquarters cannot be successful without the support of the Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion; we are the support that allows the division to execute their mission,” Schin said. “I am honored to be part of this battalion.”

The 42nd Inf. Div. is one of 18 Army divisions, consisting of anywhere between 10,000 to 15,000 Soldiers of all ranks from private to major general. “Running a headquarters here is significant,” Biehler added.
