NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — Just over two hours from The Great Place is New Braunfels, a picturesque city that draws visitors nationwide. The city is known for its rich cultural history, its quaint small-town beauty and, notably, its bustling farmers market.
Touted as “Texas’ favorite farmers market,” the New Braunfels Farmers Market at Krause’s Café and Biergarten gives the community access to a variety of vendors offering locally grown fruits, vegetables and so much more.
The market is located in downtown New Braunfels and appeals to chefs, craft enthusiasts, shoppers and foodies alike, hosting more than 60 merchants selling everything from specially blended teas, locally sourced wines, homemade jams, fresh seafood and floral bouquets to savory delicacies made to order like lumpia and barbecue.
As live music filled the air, I strolled down the aisles, eyeing the many offerings, wishing I could sample them all.
I was drawn to the craft teas vendor and purchased chai- and strawberry-flavored varieties for me and my sister.
I also bought savory cashews, cinnamon sugar pecans, homemade cashew brittle and, after sampling it and discovering how many ways I could cook with it, small jars of roasted garlic and black garlic spread.
I enjoyed perusing each booth and was amazed by the sheer variety of what was offered.
Whether visitors are craving sweet or savory, there was something for everyone, and for those who couldn’t wait to dive into their delectables, they could enjoy them just steps away at the spacious Krause Café and Biergarten.
The café features indoor and outdoor seating, a full food and drink menu, and live music. It invites shoppers to have a seat and enjoy their market finds or order something from the menu.
The menu gives a nod to the café’s German heritage with a variety of the country’s favorite offerings for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Guests can sit inside the café, enjoy their meals outside under a covered area with a stage for live performances or relax in the expansive Bier Halle.
The Bier Halle is decorated with colorful flags and offers open seating with long picnic style tables. The venue displays an eye-catching bar with a variety of beer taps that feature the largest beer selection in New Braunfels, ranging from light and refreshing pale ales and rich and dark brown ales to malty blends, ciders, IPAs and more. Can’t decide which to try? Sample any four at a time with a beer flight.
There are also bold reds, sweet chardonnays and crisp pinot grigios for wine enthusiasts and seasonal cocktails like the lavender tequila old fashioned and blueberry martini for those craving something different.
This was one of the best farmers markets I have visited, and I can’t wait to go back.
The New Braunfels Farmers Market at Krause’s Café and Biergarten is open 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. every Saturday all year long, rain or shine.
