ARNOLD AIR FORCE BASE, Tenn. – Throughout the process to upgrade it, the Giant Voice System at Arnold Air Force Base has continued to transmit events across the installation to honor the nation’s flag.
These events involve the sounding of music, and protocols are in place for individuals on Arnold to follow when this music commences.
“Reveille” is played each weekday at 7:30 a.m. to signify the start of the official duty day and the raising of the American flag. This is immediately followed by the playing of “To the Colors.”
When “Reveille” sounds, those not inside a building and out of their vehicles are to stop and face the American flag or the direction from which the music is broadcast if the flag is not visible. Individuals are to remain in place until the playing of “To the Colors” has completed.
Once the music begins, all vehicles inside the gated areas of the base are to come to a complete stop until the last note of “To the Colors” is played.
Vehicles outside of the gates should not stop for safety purposes.
This protocol does not apply to those working indoors when the music begins. These individuals may continue working.
The morning music protocol is similar to instructions those on base are to follow when the music is broadcast in the afternoon.
Each weekday at 4:30 p.m., “Retreat” is played. This is immediately followed by the national anthem.
“Retreat” signifies the end of the official duty day and the lowering of the American flag. Those outside of Arnold buildings and not in their vehicles are again asked to stop and face the American flag or the direction of the music if the flag is not visible.
When the national anthem begins to play, those outside are to place their right hand over their heart while continuing to face the flag. Those wearing a hat are to remove it and hold the hat at the left shoulder.
Individuals are to remain in place until the playing of the national anthem has concluded.
Again, this protocol does not apply to those working indoors when the afternoon music starts.
Just as they would once the music begins to play in the morning, those in vehicles within the gated areas of Arnold are to bring their vehicles to a complete stop when the music begins in the afternoon and remain stopped until the last note of the national anthem is played.
