Fort McCoy held an Installation Run on July 19 with more than 130 Soldiers from across the installation in an effort that helped build esprit de corps, teamwork, and more, among the various units participating.

The run included the installation’s senior commander, a two-star general, with the 88th Readiness Division leading the way with Soldiers from the division.

The run also included Soldiers with the Fort McCoy Garrison, 86th Training Division, 181st Multi-Functional Training Brigade and its related units, Fort McCoy Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Fort McCoy Regional Training Site-Maintenance and related 94th Training Division service members, and other units.

The Fort McCoy Installation Run was a form of a unit formation run. According to https://www.armyprt.com, unit formation runs “elicit intangible rewards from running with a group, such as esprit de corps, team building, and discipline.”

The websites also states unit formation runs are organized by squad, platoon, company, or battalion, and not by ability.

“Keeping a large unit in step, with proper distance intervals and correct running form, offers intangible benefits that commanders desire,” the website states. “They are based on a time or distance achieved with unit integrity and a display of unit cohesion. … The unit fitness run rallies military personnel towards greater discipline while promoting unified teamwork.”

For the Fort McCoy event, it took place as the sun was coming up and weather was practically ideal for everyone participating. Throughout the nearly 2 miles of running, the Soldiers shouted cadences and ran in step.

The event was also held prior to the Fort McCoy Garrison holding a change-of-command ceremony the same morning, and a day before the 88th Readiness Division also holding a change-of-command ceremony.

Fort McCoy’s motto is to be the “Total Force Training Center.”

Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin.

The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services nearly every year since 1984.
