Fargo, N.D. – Admiral Stuart B. Munsch, the Navy’s “Old Goat,” welcomed five members of the newest generation of Sailors into the naval service during a special enlistment ceremony at the Fargo Airsho, Jul. 27. The airshow, part of Fargo Navy Week, highlighted the Navy’s commitment to North Dakota and the career opportunities available to young Americans that the Navy provides.
“As the Navy’s Old Goat, I’ve seen a lot of changes in our service, but one thing stays constant: the incredible spirit of those who serve,” said Admiral Munsch. “These young Sailors are the future of our Navy. It’s an incredible honor to welcome these young men and women into the greatest Navy in the world.”
The title “Old Goat” is a prestigious honor bestowed upon the longest-serving active-duty graduate of the United States Naval Academy. Admiral Munsch, a native of Oakes, North Dakota, graduated from the Naval Academy in 1985.
“It’s a full circle moment for me to be here in Fargo, welcoming new Sailors into the Navy,” Munsch added. “My career began when I left North Dakota for Annapolis nearly 43 years ago. I vividly remember starting my journey here, and I’m inspired by the potential of these young men and women.”
In addition to the five Sailors, Admiral Munsch also enlisted 16 North Dakotans into the Marines, Air Force, and Army.
OS2 Brendon Wallock, the lead Navy recruiter for North Dakota, expressed his enthusiasm for the new enlistees. “North Dakota may be far from the ocean, but its values of hard work, resilience, and service are the bedrock of our Navy,” said Wallock. “These qualities are exactly what we look for in our Sailors. I’m incredibly proud to welcome these young men and women into the naval service and excited to see what they will accomplish.”
The enlistment ceremony was a highlight of Fargo Navy Week, which aims to increase awareness of the Navy in the local community. The week-long event features static displays, live demonstrations, and opportunities for the public to interact with Navy personnel.
