WSP ARG-24th MEU (SOC) Completes Readiness and Sustainment Training Exercise

    SOUDA BAY, GREECE

    08.06.2024

Story by 1st Lt. Thomas Miller

    24th Marine Expeditionary Unit

NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY SOUDA BAY, Greece – U.S. Marines and Sailors with the Wasp Amphibious Ready Group (WSP ARG)-24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Special Operations Capable (SOC) conducted a readiness and sustainment training exercise focused on core mission essential tasks at Naval Support Activity Souda Bay, Greece, July 13-17, 2024.

The exercise was part of the regular training cycle designed to ensure that the WSP ARG and the 24th MEU (SOC) maintain the highest levels of readiness and operational capability. This built upon core MEU (SOC) Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) mission essential tasks rehearsed during the enhanced pre-deployment training program completed prior to the unit’s deployment.

“The 24th MEU continues to perform and execute at a very high level,” said Maj. Brian Hubert, executive officer for Battalion Landing Team 1/8, 24th MEU (SOC). “These types of sustainment exercises help us to continue to build upon the foundations we developed during our pre-deployment work-up. Having the chance to continue to hone our skills as an entire Navy-Marine Corps team raises the level of comfort and proficiency to respond to any potential contingencies we might encounter.”

Readiness and sustainment exercises are critical for maintaining the readiness of the WSP ARG-24th MEU (SOC), while also demonstrating the United States' commitment to regional security and stability. When conducting these exercises, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps reassure Allies and partners of their capability to respond to crises, support humanitarian missions, and contribute to collective security efforts.

“We have the watch, therefore we have to continue to get better and never become complacent. We never know when the call will come, and if it does, we will do what Marines have done for generations and succeed,” said Hubert. “Getting the entire ARG-MEU team together shows not only our geographic combatant commanders, but also our Allies and partners in the region that we are ready, willing and able to respond as the premier crisis response task force in the region.”

The WSP ARG consisting of the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship USS New York (LPD 21), and the Harpers Ferry-class amphibious landing dock ship USS Oak Hill (LSD 51), with the embarked 24th MEU (SOC), form a versatile and powerful force capable of conducting a wide range of missions. These missions include amphibious operations, combat operations, crisis response, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and the evacuation of non-combatants.

“The ARG-MEU is ready and capable of deploying with limited notice as a Marine Air-Ground Task Force in support of crisis, expeditionary operations on land, or from the sea,” said Hubert. “I am extremely proud and confident in our team and trust each teammate to my left and right.”

The WSP-ARG, with the embarked 24th MEU (SOC), is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. Naval Forces Europe area of operations, employed by U.S. Sixth Fleet to defend U.S., Allied, and partner interests.
