The U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition continues at Grafenwoehr Training Area, with competing squads hitting the tail end of the three-day field exercise. By the conclusion of Day 6 on Aug. 6, there was a slight change to the standings compared to the day prior. Team Delta, assigned to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and representing V Corps in the competition, held on tightly to their lead. They are now followed by Team Bravo and Team Charlie, both of whom are assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade and represent Southern European Task Force, Africa. V Corps’ Team Echo, who held the third place slot during the previous two days, fell to fourth place.

At the start of Day 7 on Aug. 7, competing squads continued operating in the wooden terrain of the training area, continuing to demonstrate their ability in accomplishing combat-focused tasks and battle drills. The three remaining squads advanced through three specialized lanes. During each lane, teams performed a series of medical, chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN), and patrol-related exercises, respectively. Each iteration offered the teams a chance to hone and showcase their battlefield skills through various scenarios, all of which replicated situations that could be faced in the real world. With the conclusion of the day’s lanes came the end of the three-day field exercise, and all squads returned to their living quarters before entering into the final two days of the competition.

“I’m proud of my team for all their hard work and overcoming the obstacles we faced over the last week,” said Staff Sgt. Michael King, squad leader for Team Alpha. “They were really able to demonstrate their proficiency in their warrior tasks and battle drills and they made 7th Army Training Command proud.”

The U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition will conclude on Friday, Aug. 9, with an awards ceremony and winner announcement taking place at 1 p.m. Central European Standard Time/7 a.m. EST. The awards ceremony will be available for viewing via Facebook Live, so be sure to check the USAREUR-AF Facebook page and the daily wrap-up tomorrow for access to the link.
