The U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition approaches its end at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, with competing squads participating in the final day of testing. By the conclusion of Day 7 on Aug. 7, there was no change to the standings compared to the day prior. Team Delta, assigned to the 2nd Cavalry Regiment and representing V Corps in the competition, held on tightly to their lead. They were followed by Team Bravo and Team Charlie, both of whom are assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade and represent Southern European Task Force, Africa.

At the start of Day 8 on Aug. 8, squads competed in an Expert Physical Fitness Test, or EPFA, where teams performed a series of physical fitness exercises including a run, water jug carry, sandbag loads, and high crawls. Once complete, squads moved on to a formal board, where each Soldier, in their dress uniform, was inspected and asked a series of questions by a panel of senior Noncommissed Officers. This event modeled the traditional boards that Soldiers attend to earn certain titles, such as promotion status and Soldier/NCO of the Month. Following the formal board was a written assessment, where each Soldier was tested on their technical and tactical knowledge. The end of the day marked the end of the testing portion of the competition.

“It was a lot of good training, for sure,” said Sgt. Anthony Valdez, a member of Team Bravo who is assigned to the 173rd Airborne Brigade and representing Southern European Task Force, Africa during the competition. “We did some things that were outside our norm, but it allowed us to improve our skills and continue to be better Soldiers.”

The U.S. Army Europe and Africa Best Squad Competition concludes on Friday, Aug. 9, with an awards ceremony and winner announcement taking place at 1 p.m. Central European Standard Time/7 a.m. EST.
