BELTON, Texas — There is nothing better than enjoying a meal while staring out at an amazing view. In my opinion, no restaurant does a better job of accentuating dining al fresco than Dead Fish Grill.

Located less than a half hour from The Great Place, and touted as Central Texas’ best lakeside establishment, the long-standing restaurant specializes in seafood and Southern comfort offerings for lunch, dinner or brunch, and features stunning views of Lake Belton.

The popular venue began with the vision of Frank Smith who saw an opportunity to capitalize on the beauty of the location and open “Frank’s Lakeview Inn” in 1954.

More than 50 years later, Smith’s legacy transcended decades when Dead Fish Grill opened in 2008, and the establishment has captivated guests ever since.

Upon entering, my good friend Shewana and I were greeted by a hostess and invited to relax at the bar while we waited for a table outside on the patio.

On our way to the bar, we couldn’t help but notice the giant metal fish sculpture adorned with metal gills, indicative of the specialty of the house.

The bar sits at the center of the venue and can be seen from any angle. We cozied up on our barstools and perused the drink menu for something refreshing and fruity.

Selections included a variety of margaritas and signature cocktails with catchy monikers, such as the Lake Sipper made with cucumber vodka, elderflower, lime juice, simple syrup and ginger beer, and the Slippery Minnow, a combination of Deep Eddy Lemon Vodka, lemon juice, pomegranate liquor and soda water.

Though tempting, we opted for traditional margaritas, frozen and on the rocks respectively.

We sipped our drinks as the waitress led us out to the lakefront patio and seated us at a table with panoramic views of water as far as the eye could see.

After a few selfies featuring Lake Belton in the background, we devoured savory beef empanadas before digging into our main entrees of catfish with corn on the cob.

Even after savoring a delectable meal, we relished the atmosphere and stayed to enjoy the picturesque view.

Whether dining indoors taking in the scenic views of the lake or enjoying a meal amid the serenity of the water, the experience is unlike any other.

Dead Fish Grill has become one of my favorite places to dine. I may go for the food, but I stay for the view.
