MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – The Quantico Shooting Club recently launched its Shotgun Sports Mentorship Program, which is open to ranks corporal and below with an offer of a free two-year membership.

This mentorship program allows service members without access to firearms to join current QSC members who serve as their mentor. Mentees will learn how to operate shotguns and conduct fire on a skeet and trap range.

“Quantico Shooting Club is a great place to learn from experienced shooters,” said Lonny D. Evenson, a member of the club and mentor of the program. “There are many people at the club willing to offer advice and get a new shooter on target, not only in the shotgun disciplines, but rifle and pistol shooting as well.”

The program will provide 50 rounds of shotgun ammunition free of charge, enough for two games. Mentors and mentees are only responsible to pay for the targets, which will cost $10.

“My favorite part was how much I was able to learn from my mentor,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Chris Standish, a student in the program and now an advocate for its success. “Even with my previous experiences shooting with my dad, the fine details of shotgun shooting that my mentor was able to instill really made a difference to me.”

So, what is skeet and trap shooting? Trap shooting is a type of shotgun shooting sport where the shooter tracks small clay “pigeons” – disks – that are launched in the air by a machine beneath the line of fire. Skeet shooting is the practice of having two targets launched at intercepting angles to simulate how birds would fly. This challenges the shooter to hit both targets and whilst giving the shooter a more realistic practice if the individual wishes to participate in that style of hunting.

“To me, the Shotgun Sports Mentorship Program shows Quantico Shooting Club’s commitment to being a faithful partner with Quantico’s military community,” said Stephen Austin, a member of the QSC’s board of directors. “QSC’s volunteer members are always ready to provide junior Marines the opportunity to participate in the shotgun shooting sports in a safe, personal, and friendly environment.”

To participate, active duty servicemembers need to be ranks E-4 and below; then they need to visit the QSC Club House located near the shotgun ranges. A staff member will organize the orientation, weapons handling lessons, and the course of fire for skeet and trap shooting. At any point, those ranks can sign up for the two-year free membership to the QSC.

“We believe this program offers junior Marines a great opportunity to simply have outdoor fun on weekends and enjoy themselves participating in a new sport, for virtually free,” Austin said.

If you or another service member is interested in this program, call (703) 463-8214 or visit https://quanticoshootingclub.com/shotgun-sports-mentorship-program-skeet-trap for questions and registration.
