CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. – On July 24, Letterkenny Army Depot interns and mentors came together to celebrate National Intern Day, which is typically observed July 25.

LEAD’s Skills Development Office recognized the valuable contributions of current and former student trainees by hosting an appreciation event. The current interns, who have gained diverse job experiences, participated in various activities to celebrate and acknowledge the partnerships they created with their mentors.

The celebration included LEAD-themed bingo and other activities organized by Jen Coccagna, strategic integrator and internship program coordinator, SDO, and Hanna Woolf, management clerk intern, SDO. Interns and their mentors all competed to win prizes.

“The internship program provides a diverse educational environment in which students from various professions can put their learned skills to use in practical ways,” Coccagna said. “Each student works on a project aligned with their profession, which teaches them essential project management and communication skills that cannot be taught in a classroom.

“They can take these skills with them into their future endeavors in either the public or private sector.”

Daniel Barnes, a mechanical engineering student at Penn State Harrisburg, is one of the current engineering interns. Barnes expressed his gratitude for the hands-on experience and the sense of inclusion within the team.

“This opportunity has heightened my enthusiasm for pursuing a career in mechanical engineering,” Barnes remarked. “Experiencing a government internship has reshaped my initial perceptions of working in the public sector, and now I am inclined to seek employment as a government employee in the future.”

After college graduation, many interns secure employment at LEAD. Gillian Dymond finished her internship at the depot in 2021 and now works full time as a partnership program analyst.

“My internship taught me in depth how partnership programs function and how different directorates interact throughout an expansive depot”, Dymond said. “What I looked forward to, during my internship, was the people I worked with and their support in teaching me about different duties I now do full time.”

LEAD’s internship program provides students real-world experience in their fields of study while connecting them to a cause greater than themselves—supporting U.S. and allied forces.
