    3rd Infantry Division

FORT STEWART, Ga. — The 3rd Infantry Division (3rd ID) welcomed Col. Matt Ross as the new Deputy Commander of Maneuver during a ceremony here, Aug. 9, 2024. Ross’s experience and career trajectory mark a new chapter for the Division.
Ross comes to his new role having served most recently as the executive officer to the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army, Gen. Randy George.
Throughout his career, Ross has served in various leadership positions ranging from platoon leader with the 101st Airborne Division to brigade-level commander in the special operations community.
Like many Soldiers, Ross joined the Army not knowing how long or in what capacity he would serve. However, witnessing the attacks of 9/11 shortly following his graduation from West Point, the trajectory of his career, which has spanned more than 23 years, would change significantly, Ross said.
“It’s easy to take our safety and security for granted, but I have seen enough of the world that I do not make that mistake,” said Ross. “Freedom and democracy must be fought for and protected. I believe that and I am happy to do my part.”
As the new Deputy Commander of Maneuver, Ross will be instrumental in guiding the Division's operational strategies and enhancing its movement capabilities.
“I look forward to bringing my experiences into the conversation as we transform our formation to fight and win on the current and future battlefield,” stated Ross. “We are learning every day and we need to make sure the lessons we learn by observing contemporary conflicts, or through training, are incorporated into our tactics, techniques, procedures and standard operating procedures.”
His extensive background in both conventional and special operations will provide invaluable insight as he continues to uphold the Division's legacy of excellence.
“It is our sincere hope that you’ll find this opportunity both challenging and inspirational,” said Maj. Gen. Christopher R. Norrie, Commanding General of 3rd ID. “We are grateful and proud to welcome you here as our Deputy Commanding Officer. And as always here at Fort Stewart, and 3rd ID, we remain not fancy, just tough.”
