ALPENA, Mich.--Soldiers from the 323rd Military Police Company trained on a variety of combat tasks and battle drills this summer as part of as part of Exercise Northern Strike 2024-2 at various locations across Michigan, including Camp Grayling, Alpena Combat Readiness Training Center and Rogers City.

Exercise Northern Strike 24-2 saw approximately 6,000 participants from not only the Department of Defense but also allied and partnered nations across the world.

During this exercise, members of the 323rd had the unique opportunity to partner with special operators of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne).

“To work with SF, the best of the best, it’s been real great,” said Sgt. John Duran, military police officer, 323rd Military Police Company. “They have been great at explaining everything, from the simple movements to the more complicated ones. So, working from nothing to getting to a point where we can successfully operate with them and integrate with them has been a great experience.”

Throughout Exercise Northern Strike, the 323rd received training and guidance from the special operators and operated as a simulated partner force embedded with Company B throughout the scenarios. The two forces conducted several exercises, such as area reconnaissance, fast rope insertion and extractions system training, ambush techniques and more.

“Over this annual training, we worked with special forces of different varieties,” said Pfc. Darman Jones, military police officer with the 323rd. “Some were working in medical; some were really good with weapons. Others were good with (communications). So, we worked on all those things: learned how to set up ambushes, learned how to do recon, get information from the enemies, learned how to work together as a team, better (at) doing convoy securities, ambushes and clearing buildings and saving hostages.”

Missions and training events were active both day and night, requiring the military police officers of the 323rd and special operators of Company B to be ready and capable at a moment’s notice.

“I've definitely grown a lot over the last couple of days; physically, mentally, and understanding how the operations at the lowest level build into the overall battle space,” said 2nd Lt. Kyle Funk, a military police officer and platoon leader with the 323rd. “And as far as my junior enlisted go, I think they've gained a lot of experience. My Soldiers stepped up, conducted the mission and completed the objective.”
