JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska—An open house was held at the Alaska Fisher House to highlight and raise awareness for Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) that many veterans in Alaska face at Joint Base Elemendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Aug 19, 2024.

The Alaska Fisher house partnered with Resurrecting Lives Foundation, a veterans non-profit on a mission to increase diagnosis and treatment of TBI and PTSD. Consequently, their mission is to reduce suicide, the final consequence for wounds of service. With Alaska leading the nation in both military and veterans suicides, they are resolved to decrease those numbers and assist with better brain health in Alaska.

During the open house, U.S. Army Veteran Jessy Lakin shared his story about mental challenges after his time in service. Lakin is now involved in serving veterans in Alaska. In his current role at Alaska Warrior Partnership, Lakin’s leadership has been crucial in driving collaboration and problem-solving efforts to address the multifaceted challenges veterans face.

“We've identified over 1,200 veterans in need of support, helped 180 homeless veterans find housing, connected 250 to Veterans Affairs benefits just this last quarter, and assisted many more with employment and other services,” said Lakin.

To help alleviate veterans’ isolation and anxiety, Resurrecting Lives Foundation and Pisano Artistry have joined forces to launch a unique national campaign: Veterans Standing Together Across America (VSTAA).

During the open house, a 3D Industrial Art U.S. flag was gifted to the Alaska Fisher House. The flag, made by retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Joe Pisano, is composed of 5,000 drywall screws and was commissioned and donated by the Resurrecting Lives Foundation.

The frames constructed around the flag will bear the names of all Alaskan veterans who choose to sign, as a symbolic act of history, honor and healing. The flag will unite Alaska with the “Lower 48” and remind residents they are not alone in the struggle for freedom with mental health.

The flag will reside in the Alaska Fisher House and is open to any veteran who wishes to sign their name on its frame. AK Fisher House can be reached at 907-222-1673.
