Naval Supply Systems Command Weapon Systems Support participated in the Chief Petty Officer Heritage Academy held aboard the Battleship New Jersey Aug. 22-25.
The former USS New Jersey, the U.S. Navy’s most decorated battleship, is now a museum and memorial in Camden, New Jersey. This is the 15h year the Battleship New Jersey has hosted the CPO Heritage Academy.
“The purpose of the CPO Heritage Academy was to expose chief-selects and CPOs to the history and heritage of Philadelphia and the USS New Jersey. Additionally, it facilitates mentorship, fellowship, and stewardship within the CPO community,” said NAVSUP WSS' Command Master Chief Petty Officer Christopher Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald has been involved in every CPO initiation since becoming a chief petty officer in 2005.
Also participating from NAVSUP WSS were Senior Chief Petty Officers AJ Portman and Juan Pantoja, and Chief Petty Officer Will Thomas.
During the four-day event, active duty and reserve officers selected for promotion to chief petty officer received instruction designed to enhance their leadership skills. While aboard, the chief-selects participated in events that were designed to challenge them both mentally and physically.
Sixty chief-selects from 16 commands participated, traveling from as far away as Arizona.
Offsite visits included the Liberty Bell, National Constitution Center, and the gravesite of Commodore John Barry.
“This training is critical to growing the leaders our navy needs to be effective, afloat and ashore,” said Fitzgerald. “Every year, this is a powerful reminder as to the excellence and commitment it takes to serve.”
NAVSUP WSS provides program and life cycle supply support for the weapon systems that keep U.S. naval forces mission ready. With locations in Philadelphia; Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; Norfolk, Virginia; and Tucson, Arizona, the command manages operational readiness for almost 300 deployable ships, 92 submarines, and 3,700 aircraft worldwide.
