JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska– Chair for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), Maria Rosario Jackson, PhD, accompanied by other members of the NEA and the Alaska State Council on the Arts, visited the Traumatic Brain Injury Clinic at the 673d Medical Group, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Aug. 21, 2024.

The NEA, an independent federal agency established by Congress in 1965, is the largest funder of arts and education in communities around the country, and a catalyst for public and private arts support.

Jackson and the team had the opportunity to learn more about the work of JBER’s creative arts therapists and interdisciplinary teams. These teams are employed in treatment programs that focus on each patient’s unique needs through the arts.

“The NEA is committed to supporting the health and well-being of our military community,” said Jackson. “We are eager to meet with the folks who are closest to the work. We have been partnering with JBER through the Creative Forces: NEA Military Healing Arts Network to learn how the arts can be part of an effective response to heal TBI and associated trauma.”

According to the NEA website, The Creative Forces: NEA Military Healing Arts Network is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the U.S. Departments of Defense and Veterans Affairs that seeks to improve the health, well-being, and quality of life for military and veteran populations exposed to trauma, as well as their families and caregivers.

Jackson said that the program has evolved to include research projects and community partnerships, which help to understand how the work continues after the service members complete their treatment.

JBER’s TBI Clinic aims to provide comprehensive, evidence-based treatment for the mind, while providing the greatest degree of care to the individual. The clinic offers a variety of care, to include music therapy and art therapy.

“The TBI clinic is engaged in research on creative arts therapies to expand the evidence base for the effectiveness of multidisciplinary TBI treatment,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Laura Baugh, commander of the 673d MDG. “They provide a foundation for expanding creative arts therapy capabilities across the DoD and beyond.”

If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health, please reach out to the JBER Mental Health Clinic at (907) 580-0014.
