HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. – Classes begin for Hanscom School students starting Aug. 29.

The 66th Security Forces Squadron and base officials offer tips to help kids stay safe.

“Be careful what you post on social media,” said Capt. Timothy Tran, 66 SFS operations officer. “We recommend not posting kids names and addresses. Remember to turn off location services and geotagging.”

Due to the proximity of the school to base housing all students walk, bike, scooter or are dropped off as Hanscom School does not offer busing.

For bike and scooter riders the National Safety Council recommends the following tips:

    • Ride on the right side of the road with traffic and a single file
    • Come to a complete stop before crossing the street and walk, don’t ride across
    • Avoid distracted riding. Personal electronics should not be used while riding
    • Always wear a properly fitted helmet and bright clothing

“Make sure that your children know the route that they're supposed to take to and from school,” said LauraLee Morris, 66th Air Base Group resident advocate.

Drivers should pay extra attention to crosswalks and speed limits in housing and school zones. Allow kids and families to fully cross the street before driving through intersections.

For information about making a smooth transition to the Hanscom school community, contact the 66th ABG school liaison officer.
