During the early to mid 2010s, the Aerospace Vehicles Division (An Aerospace Systems Directorate precursor), along with FlexSys and NASA, ran the Revolutionary Configurations for Energy Efficiency (RCEE) program, testing and validating the concept of a Variable Geometry Airfoil System, which improves aerodynamic efficiency by 5-7% (in drag reduction) over conventional systems. the FlexfoilTM variable geometry airfoil system is comprised of an application of proprietary compliant mechanism design, primarily using traditional aerospace materials and actuators applied as a multi- functional trailing edge surface for aircraft control and load control. Testing over 20 sorties yielded: Envelope expansion; -2º to +30º deflection; Altitude/air speed up to 40,000 ft, Mach 0.75
