    *** PRESS RELEASE***
    William Greason 100th Birthday Celebration
RECRUITING STATION MONTGOMERY HEADQUARTERS, A.L. – It is a great honor and privilege for the United States Marine Corps to recognize Rev William Greason on his 100th birthday.
“I am proud to be here with you today, and honored to celebrate you, Reverend Greason,” said retired U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Gen. J. Michael Myatt.
Greason’s birthday celebration was held at Rickwood Field, Birmingham, Alabama hosted by Heart and Armor Foundation for Veterans Health
“In any leadership position you got to remember why you are there, how you got there. You didn’t get there because you are smart, somebody had to help you… I learned that in bootcamp,” said Greason
Greason, a native of Atlanta, GA, enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1943 and completed his basic training at Montford Point, Camp Lejeune, N.C. He was assigned to the 66th Supply Platoon, 34th Marine Depot Company, V Amphibious Corps and witnessed the raising of the U.S. flag atop Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima in 1945. Greason pitched in the Negro League World Series at Rickwood Field in 1948 and became the first Black pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals in the Major Leagues. He went on to obtain a doctoral degree in divinity studies in Birmingham, AL and has been serving as a pastor at Bethel Baptist Church for 53 years.
“Reverend Greason is an exemplary Marine, embodying the values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. His actions both during and after service exemplify how we strive to return quality citizens back to their communities. The Marines of Recruiting Station Montgomery Alabama are proud to serve our community alongside a Marine like him,” said Maj. Nicolas R. Martino
