Serving others: Master Sgt. Jason Hester broadens his range of impact

Story by Senior Airman Victoria Coursey

    165th Airlift Wing

After nearly two decades of service in the Georgia Air National Guard, Master Sgt. Jason Hester is set to take on a new challenge. Hester, public health flight chief of the 165th Medical Group, is assuming the role of Public Health Functional Area and Component Field Manager (FAM) this summer, a position that will see him overseeing public health operations at a national level.

Hester joined the Air Force Reserves in 1996 as a flight medic, but transferred to the Georgia Air National Guard when the career field was discontinued. Since then, he has held multiple Air Force Speciality Codes (AFSC) at the 165th Airlift Wing, ranging from field medic, lab technician and public health.

“I’ve gained confidence throughout my military career by qualifying in different career fields,” Hester said. “I’ve learned to be forward thinking by focusing on both upgrade training in my current career field and taking refresher courses in my previous AFSCs.”

As the Public Health FAM, Hester will be responsible for managing policy, resources, and manpower for public health units stationed across the ANG’s 50 states and 4 territories.

“My main motivation is figuring out how I can make a broader impact,” Hester explained. “Savannah is home to me, but the Public Health FAM position widens the range of impact and value I can share with the career field from a national level.”

Throughout his 17-year career, Hester has built a reputation of excellence with his peers and unit.

“To me, Hester is the Michael Jordan of public health,” said Col. James Reed, commander, 165th Medical Group. “He served as an outstanding public health flight chief at the 165th Airlift Wing and has impeccable character and a large skill set that will allow him to excel in his new role at NGB.”

As Hester takes on this national leadership role, he remains focused on his core mission: serving others.

“My favorite part of serving in the Air National Guard is to support my country and community in the job that I do,” Hester said. “Whether at the local level in Savannah or on a national scale, my goal has always been to support the health and well-being of those I serve.”
