KALAELOA, HAWAII - The Hawaii Army National Guard (HIARNG) held a change of command ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024, as Brig. Gen. Stephen F. Logan relinquished command to Brig. Gen. Tyson Y. Tahara.

The ceremony was presided by Maj. Gen. Kenneth S. Hara, Adjutant General for the State of Hawaii, Department of Defense. Hara passed the unit colors during the ceremony representing the transfer of authority and responsibility for the unit from one commander to another.

Logan assumed command of the Hawaii Army National Guard in October 2021. He assumed his duties as the Assistant Adjutant General - Army, on Dec. 6, 2019 and also serves as the Deputy Adjutant General for the State of Hawai’i, Department of Defense. Logan is the fourth dual status commander in the history of the Hawaii National Guard.

“His (Logan) top goal, which he achieved with remarkable success, was to improve the overall readiness of the Hawaii Army National Guard,” said Hara. “During his tenure, multiple HIARNG units federally mobilized and deployed in support of major operations.”

Most recently he served as commander of the Joint Task Force 50 (JTF-50) in support of the 2023 Maui Wildfire response. He was in command of the 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team and served as senior trainer for Joint Readiness Training Center rotation 23-08.5 at Fort Johnson, Louisiana in 2023.

“ Command is truly a gift, and I was fortunate to spend this time with some of the finest Soldiers, non commissioned officers and officers who wear this nation's cloth,” said Logan.

Hawaii National Guard Soldiers assist with natural disasters and events, such as hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wildfires, pandemics and more.

“The National Guard must be ready for anything, which is conveyed in its motto, “Always ready, always there,’” said Logan.

Tahara enlisted in the Hawaii Army National Guard as a power generator mechanic in 1986. He was later commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1992. His first assignment was as a petroleum officer with the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 29th Support Battalion. His latest positions include serving as commander of 103rd Troop Command and most recently as HIARNG Chief of Staff.

“I would like to congratulate Brig. Gen. Logan on an extremely successful command,” said Tahara. “I will do my best to continue your initiatives’ and strive to grow and improve the Hawaii Army National Guard. You have set the HIARNG up for success. Onipa’a 06 signing in! Mahalo.”
