NELLIS AIR FORCE BASE, Nev. -- The 820th RED HORSE Squadron (RHS) hosted the second annual Heritage Physical training (PT) Challenge on Aug 20.
The Heritage PT Challenge was created to help prepare the next generation of Airmen by simulating difficult conditions and crucial tasks the RHS forebears faced in a deployed environment.
“We did PT together to build comradery and celebrate the unit's history,” said Tech. Sgt. Enry Delos Santos, 820th RHS fleet management section chief. “Events like heritage day strengthen unit cohesion because we get out of our shops and interact with each other on a personal level.”
The RHS Heritage PT Challenge is composed of six team-building events that are designed to challenge Airmen's physical strength, cardiovascular stamina, and mental acuity. The events range from rapidly building a defensive fighting position, RED HORSE trivia, pushing armored vehicles, Size, Activity, Location, Unit, Time, and Equipment (SALUTE) reports, litter carry and message relay. All six stations have additional exercises to complete during the challenge.
“Advanced training is a major part of how we train here and these types of exercise help our troops prepare for any potential fights in the future,” explained Delos Santos.
RED HORSE stands for Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers. The 820th RHS is a self-sufficient, engineering and logistics unit of thirty-eight mission support Air Force Specialty Codes that provide full-spectrum construction capabilities worldwide. RED HORSE has a long history of being deployed all over the world to project integrated Air Force engineer capabilities anywhere at any time.
“The 820th RED HORSE Squadron was formed during the Vietnam War as a capability to build airfields in a combat environment” said Chief Master Sgt. Michael Murieen, 820th RHS senior enlisted leader. “In 1966, the 820th RHS built an airfield called Tuy Hoa Air Base which was nine miles behind enemy lines and RED HORSE has been in every conflict since the Vietnam War.”
Murieen recounted that the red hat is known around the world. People see the symbol in disaster response, humanitarian assistance, special operations, classified operations and combat operations. “No one knows they are a part of history when they are making it,” said Murieen. “The Airmen of today are making history just like the ones we pay homage to.”
