In a small ceremony on July 2nd, 2024, Capt. Mike Dolbec, commodore of Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) Group One, on behalf of the U.S. Navy, transferred custody of Large Training Vehicle 38 (LTV 38) to U.S. Naval Undersea Museum in Keyport, Washington. The museum will ensure the vehicle and its place in history are preserved and displayed for future generations to enjoy.
LTV 38 was originally developed by the Penn State University Applied Research Laboratory for the Sea Stalker program. The vehicle is 27 feet long and 38 inches in diameter and was originally assembled in 2008 by Penn State University's UUV land-based test facility at State College, Pennsylvania. The vehicle underwent its first series of operational tests shortly after its assembly and made its first operational deployment on the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Bainbridge (DDG 96). It was delivered to Detachment UUV in August 2014.
LTV 38 is able to perform at a maximum depth of 1,000 meters for up to 72 hours. It is designed as a full-pressure hull vehicle, capable of both line of sight and over the horizon communications. The vehicle can also conduct limited autonomous contact avoidance maneuvers via acoustic sensors while anchored, in addition to remote control.
Lindy Dosher, director of the U.S. Naval Undersea Museum, commented on the continued collaboration between the museum and Unmanned Undersea Vehicle Group One, noting, “This is one of our favorite partnerships at the museum, so I’m glad we continue these types of events.”
In his remarks, Dolbec highlighted the importance of collaboration between the U.S. Navy and academic institutions, stating, “Across this great country, everywhere, there are students, professors, engineers, working side-by-side with Sailors, and they are able to accomplish amazing things.” He also noted the importance of the date, “I think it is also appropriate that we are here on the cusp of our Independence Day, acknowledging the power of our ideas and the partnerships that enable those things and what they accomplish—to support and defend our democracy.”
