Sailors aboard the Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) celebrated Women’s Equality Day during an observance held on the mess decks, Aug. 26, 2024.
Women’s Equality Day celebrates the passage of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote on August 26, 1920.

The 19th Amendment also introduced other measures to be passed which allowed women to hold more prominent leadership positions in entertainment, sports, business, and government. Today’s women are pressing forward, breaking ground in the political arena, and serving in the Armed Forces.

Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 1st class Brittany Owens was the keynote guest speaker for the event and she highlighted the importance of the celebration.

“Woman’s Equality Day is in honor of countless women who shaped our world with their courage, vision, and resilience,” said Owens. “It is not only a time to reflect, but also a reminder of the ongoing journey toward equality and justice.”

Women’s Equality Day is an annual reminder of the obstacles women face in pursuing equality and the sacrifices made by earlier generations. It also raises awareness about the inequalities that women face to this day.

“There was a time earlier in my career when I was the only woman first class in weapons department, which had its challenges,” recalled Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Deanna Aguilar, another speaker at the event. “It was hard to communicate with others because I felt as if they didn’t think I could act in the capacity of a first-class simply because I was female. This made it difficult for me to know what was going on in the department daily.”

The importance of women’s rights, social justice, and military readiness is increasingly recognized. It is apparent that a more diverse military allows people from diverse backgrounds to produce different approaches and innovations to problem-solving.

The celebration of Women’s Equality Day aboard USS Makin Island is a testament to the Navy’s dedication to fostering inclusivity and supporting all personnel in their pursuit of excellence.
