KADENA AIR BASE, Japan – Airmen from the 18th Comptroller Squadron and 18th Contracting Squadron are working with master labor contractors overtime to close the fiscal year budget successfully, Sept. 13, 2024.

Members of the dual squadrons are working through the weekends to finish allocating funds and completing the associated contracts before the end of the month; ensuring everything is well-spent so Kadena Air Base continues receiving proper funding.

“In order to close out, we have to make sure the books are balanced and nothing is left,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Ryan Manning, 18th CPTS budget analyst flight commander. “It’s a lot of work so we need the whole team to pitch in through the weekend.”

Working during weekends becomes a necessity for these dedicated Kadena members due to how funds move around at the very end of the fiscal year. Achieving this type of time-sensitive goal requires constant communication.

“As contracting officers, we’re the only ones able to obligate contracts, so our role is pivotal to be able to allocate the money at the end of the year,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Mitchell Brown, 18th CPTS budget analyst. “I’ve been through this a few times, but here in Kadena, it’s pretty fast-paced, and if you’re new it can be a little overwhelming, so we have to help each other out, because it can be a demanding job.”

U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Michael A. Greiner, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Budget, Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Financial Management and Comptroller, recently met with senior leaders at Kadena before the close of the fiscal year to discuss the strategic issues and priorities impacting the financial management career field. Distinguished visitor events like these can help improve the future of the Air Force by ensuring commanders have the resources they need to properly handle the mission in today’s shifting operational and constrained financial environment.

Through their attention to detail, this financial force is on track to meet their goal of a proper budget close-out with a sense of pride before getting started on next year's budget.

“This year is going better than last year because we had everything lined up beforehand due to lessons learned from last year,” Brown said. “It feels so good to be almost through with it, but after relaxing for a bit we’ll move on to preparing for next year, going over lessons learned, what we can do better and just setting ourselves up for success at the next close out.”
