FORT CAVAZOS, Texas — Dog lovers at The Great Place rejoiced as Cavalry Family Housing and its parent company Lendlease officially opened a state-of-the-art dog park Friday in the Heritage Heights subdivision at Fort Cavazos.
The new facility comes complete with self-cleaning astro turf, separate sections for small and large dogs and animal-friendly obstacle courses.
Representatives of Cavalry Family Housing; Lendlease; Resident Advisory Board, or RAB, members; Fort Cavazos leadership; and neighborhood dog-lovers listened as Chris Albus, Cavalry Family Housing project manager, delivered a hearty greeting.
“I want to welcome the residents that have come out, especially the furry residents,” he said. “We’re very happy to have dogs. In my opinion, pets make the community better, so it’s great to be able to cut the ribbon this morning on this dog park.”
Albus recognized Lendlease workers and their efforts in completing the park.
“The Lendlease folks have done great work, and I’m very proud of them,” he expressed. “They’re the ones that started this project back in April of 2021, so this is a very exciting time.”
Col. Lakicia Stokes, U.S. Army Garrison-Fort Cavazos commander, echoed Albus’ sentiments, and thanked residents and their four-legged companions for attending.
“It is indeed an honor to be a part of this today,” she said. “And I just want to say thank you to everyone who made this come to fruition. Thank you all for what you do, not only today, but on a daily basis. We greatly appreciate it.”
Albus added in addition to the new dog park, his team has completed 3,000 roofs, over 750 renovations in Comanche I and II, paved roads in three communities, painted nearly 1,000 homes in different communities and completed 176 new homes in Heritage Heights. New backyard fences are also slated for installation in October.
Incoming RAB president Lela Billiter watched as her husband, Staff Sgt. John Billiter, 6th Squadron, 9th U.S. Cavalry, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, and their goldendoodle, Molly, tried the new amenities. She conveyed her appreciation for her new role and the honor of cutting the ribbon opening the new facility.
“I love being an advocate and resource for families both new to the area and those that have lived here for years,” Lela said. “I look forward to building bonds within the community here at The Great Place.
“Having both dogs and children myself, I understand the importance of being able to be outdoors and enjoy the time with my family,” she continued. “I know these parks will bring great joy to the families at Fort Cavazos.”
After the ceremony, dog parents and their pets took to the turf to socialize and enjoy some frolic and fun.
The new establishment stands as a testament to the standard of living the post is proud to provide Soldiers and their families, Stokes conveyed.
“It’s all about improving the quality of life here at The Great Place, and also taking care of families of Soldiers and civilians,” she said.
The dog park is open from sunrise to sunset, every day.
Residents are responsible for cleaning up after their pets and adhering to Army and housing guidelines and rules regarding conduct and respect for other residents and common property.
