Since 2009, the Aerospace Systems Directorate’s Turbine Engine Division has been involved in the Adaptive Engine Technology Development (AETD) research program, whose purpose is to develop the next generation of aircraft engines that promise to go beyond the limits of current fixed cycle engines. The new engines will optimize performance and fuel efficiency by yielding a 25% greater fuel savings, 10% more thrust at maximum power, and dramatically increasing thermal capacity. The development of adaptive engines could provide a 30% range increase with lower tanker dependency and faster acceleration. For future aircraft, these engines will provide sustained supersonic flight, a threefold increase in target coverage, and thermal growth for future expanded system capabilities.
