Ginowan Hagoromo Hari Festival was held at the port of Ginowan, July 7, 2024, the first Sunday of the month, for the first time in five years. Within the crowd, one group seemed to stand out. They were Marines from Marine Corps Air Station Futenma who were invited to participate by the Ginowan City mayor, the late Masanori Matsukawa.
“I thought it was a great opportunity and I was honored to get the invite because not every team gets a chance to race here in Ginowan,” said Col. William C. Pacatte, camp commander for Marine Corps Air Station Futenma. “The fact that he thought of us to come out to take part was an extreme honor and it shows our friendship that we have between Futenma and the City of Ginowan.”
Matsukawa, also a committee member for the event, said if he reached out to Futenma, they would come because they have been supportive of city events; not just Pacatte, but also commanders in the past. He said they have built a relationship with trust.
Ginowan Hagoromo Hari Festival was operated by the Ginowan Convention City Association, Non-profit organization, and Urasoe-Ginowan Fisheries Cooperative, supported by the City of Ginowan. Thirty-four teams participated, regardless of nationality, occupation, or region. Participating teams compete by times in a hand-paddling race on a boat over a distance of 270 meters, then the top four teams advance to the final race to be the winner.
Two teams from MCAS Futenma, totaling 30 Marines, including Pacatte, joined the event. They were from the aircraft rescue firefighting and recovery sections. The Marines heard the news of this event in June and practiced twice.
“It's synchronized and the whole paddle stroke is completely different than anything we're used to. It was very difficult at first, trying to figure out how to do it and to stay in sync. It’s a very difficult exercise, intensive for sure. I'm hoping that we can muster the strength to just grind through it and make it happen,” said Pacatte.
The team against them got the best time among all six that raced. Pacatte's team ended 24 seconds behind them.
“It's a lot louder here at the race than it was in practice, so it was very difficult to hear our pacer,” recalled Pacatte after the race.
Cpl. Jared J. Blankenship, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron, thought it would be somewhat easier, but said he felt like they ran out of stamina and motivation when they reached the turning point.
After watching the other teams’ race with his teammates, Sgt. Kahlub Gaither, firefighter and rescue station captain, aircraft recovery aircraft firefighting, HHS, stated the importance of being in sync to do better. He has been in Okinawa for four years but never has done Hari even though he heard of it, he said that “it is a hard sport and just practicing was tiring.”
Although Gaither and his team were prepared for their race as the last group to go, while they were standing on the edge of the dock for the start line, Ginowan Convention City Association announced a delay due to the bad weather. After waiting over half an hour, they called off the rest of the event without completing the final two races, which unfortunately included Gaither’s team.
According to Ayako Naito, the director for GCCA and the committee for Hari festival, it was regrettable to announce the cancellation of the event when four teams had not paddled, but it was crucial due to thunder and lightning and the safety of all participants.
Gunnery Sgt. Krist B. Martin, assistant chief of training, aircraft rescue firefighting, in Gathiher’s team, who could not row out Hari, was glad to be with the community with the great opportunity to take part in the event. He said that everyone really enjoyed going out, working and practicing. He said that they will practice more and come out again next year.
The Marines had the opportunity to learn more about the Okinawan culture. Lance Cpl. Jesse Goodlow, aircraft recovery, said because they participated with their shop members, they were able to bond more as a team. “So now we’re all closer together,” he said.
2024年7月7日、沖縄県宜野湾市の宜野湾港マリーナで、5年ぶりに宜野湾はごろもハーリー大会が開催された。その中に、ひときわ目立つグループがあった。宜野湾市の故・松川正則市長から声をかけられ大会に参加した海兵隊普天間航空基地の海兵隊員たちだ。
同基地のキャンプ司令官、ウィリアム・C・パカティー大佐は、「招待を受け、光栄に思います。彼が私たちのことを思い、私たちが参加できるように考えてくれたことは、非常に名誉なことであり、普天間（基地）と宜野湾市との友好関係を示すものだと思います」と述べた。
イベントの実行委員でもあった松川氏は、普天間航空基地はパカティー大佐だけでなく、過去の司令官たちも市のイベントに協力的であったため、彼らに声をかければ参加するのではと考えたといい、宜野湾市と普天間基地は信頼関係を築いていると話した。
宜野湾はごろもハーリー大会は、宜野湾市が後援するNPO法人宜野湾コンベンションシティ協会と浦添宜野湾漁業協同組合が運営。国籍、職業、地域を問わず34チームが参加し、参加チームは、270メートルの距離を手漕ぎボートに乗ってタイムを競い、上位4チームが決勝レースに進み、優勝を決める。
普天間航空基地からは、パカティー大佐を含む2チーム、航空機回収消防隊と航空機救難消防隊から合計30人の海兵隊員が参加した。隊員らは6月にこのイベントの知らせを聞き、2回練習した。
「動きが完全に合っていて、漕ぎ方も今までの私たちのやり方とはまったく違う。最初はどうすればいいのか、どうすればうまく息を合わせることができるのか、とても難しくて苦戦した。でも、それを乗り越えてやり遂げる強さを発揮できることを期待している」と大佐は語った。
パカティー大佐らの対戦相手は、それまでのレースを終えた6組の中でベストタイムを出した。大佐のチームは彼らから24秒遅れだった。
「レース会場は練習のときよりもずっとにぎやかで、鐘打ちの音が聞き取りにくかった」と大佐はレース後に振り返った。
本部司令部中隊のジャレッド・J・ブランケンシップ伍長は、多少は楽だろうと思っていたが、折り返し地点に差し掛かったときにスタミナと意欲が尽きたように感じたという。
他チームのレースをチームメイトと観戦した後、同中隊の航空機回収消防隊、消防士兼レスキューステーション隊長のカルーブ・ゲイナー三等軍曹は、より良い結果を出すためには息を合わせることが重要だと述べた。沖縄に来て4年になるが、ハーリーは聞いたことがあっても一度も体験したことがなく、「ハードなスポーツで、練習するだけでも疲れた」と話す。
ゲイナー三等軍曹のチームは最終組としてレースに臨んだが、スタートラインである埠頭に立っている最中に、宜野湾市コンベンションシティ協会が悪天候による遅延を発表。30分以上の待機後、最後の2組のレースを残し、大会全ての競技が中止となった。
同協同理事であり、ハーリー大会実行委員でもある内藤綾子さんによると、4チームが競技をする前に中止を発表することは残念だが、雷や落雷のため、そして参加者全員の安全を考慮したうえでの重要な決断だったとした。
ハーリーを漕ぎ出すことができなかったゲイナー三等軍曹のチームの航空機救難消防隊訓練副主任のクリスト・B・マーティン一等軍曹は、素晴らしい機会を得て地域の人たちと一緒に行事に参加できたことを喜んだ。彼は、誰もが本当に外に出て、取り組んで、練習することを楽しんだと話した。もっと練習して、来年もまた参加するつもりだと語った。
海兵隊員たちは沖縄の文化について学ぶ機会を得た。航空機回収業務のジェシー・グッドロー上等兵は、班のメンバーと一緒に参加したことで、チームとしての絆が深まった。「今、僕たちは皆、より仲良くなっているよ」と笑った。
