BAUMHOLDER, GERMANY—Senior U.S. Military officials took part in a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of new annexes at U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Rheinland-Pfalz, Baumholder, on Sept. 19, 2024. The construction is part of an ongoing $500 million program to create new buildings and restore current operational ones.
This also comes as part of a larger project to move Special Operation Forces (SOF) from U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart to USAG Rheinland-Pfalz; the project strives to improve the quality of life in Baumholder and ensure that SOF operates closer to Ramstein, the premier power projection platform in Germany.
Key speakers in attendance were Col. Daniel R. Kent, the Commander & District Engineer of the Europe District, US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and Col. Stephen Murphy, Command Engineer for United States Special Operation Command (SOCOM).
“Of course, USACE isn’t accomplishing this great feat alone. The success of this program is a reflection of a great partnership,” said Kent, about the various partners involved. The Army Corps of Engineers, USAG Rheinland-Pfalz, US Special Operations Command, and Special Operations Command Europe are some of the partners involved in the movement and construction.
Both speakers highlighted the goals of delivering quality facilities that will improve the readiness of SOF. “Relationships determine results, and I think the relationship we have here within SOCOM working towards this end goal with our Corps of Engineers and the construction workers, that is what will make this project a success,” said Murphy.
Two of the four annexes are scheduled to be completed by 2027 with the final two the following year. These facilities are only the latest of the 63 projects meant to improve the quality of life and rebuild Baumholder. Over one-third of the projects have been completed. The schedule is set to welcome SOF by 2026.
