MARINE CORPS BASE HAWAII - Mālama Ka ‘Āina, a Hawaiian expression, translates to “care of the land.” Mālama Ka ‘Āina is hosted semi-annually on Marine Corps Base Hawaii, as all hands participate in the base-wide clean-up of all buildings and grounds. MCBH executes proper solid waste disposal and enforcement procedures for littering to prevent, control, and decrease solid waste pollution in Hawaii.

In the spirit of this philosophy, MCBH’s communities were asked to embrace this sense of environmental stewardship by caring for the land of the Mōkapu Peninsula and other Marine Corps properties by participating in the Mālama Ka ‘Āina every April and September.

“This event is designed to get all Marines, Sailors, civilian personnel, family members and volunteers involved in a group effort to beautify our base,” said Cassie Roberts, environmental outreach coordinator. “This event provides a way for all of us to continue maintaining a safe, clean, and healthy place to work, live and play.”

“It is essential to follow guidelines outlined in the Recycling and Waste Disposal Guide. There’s a designated place for everything,” said Roberts, “urging everyone to sort trash properly and avoid littering in order to keep the base clean and sustainable.”

The MCBH Environmental Compliance and Protection Division oversaw the emptying and returning of all recycling bins to prevent overflow and assisted tenant commands in properly disposing of inoperable items. MCBH Recycling and Reuse Center also did its part in making sure all collected recyclable material was processed.

"Our efforts have been a great success, and I'm proud to say that we've made a visible difference in the areas we've worked on. It was encouraging to see Marines and Sailors actively participating, whether out in the weeds or along the canals, making sure every bit of waste was picked up. We didn't just stop at cleaning up; we ensured that all materials were carefully sorted for recycling, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable practices.” said Roberts.

This aligns with the base’s theme of protecting resources, which reminds us that our responsibility extends beyond today's efforts. By continuing to adopt these principles, we contribute to a cleaner, more environmentally sound future for all.
