Soldiers from the 42nd Military Police Brigade were recently awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation during a formal ceremony at Soldier's Field House, located on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, March 19.
The award was in recognition for the unit's outstanding service while deployed for 15-months in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
A streamer, representing the commendation, was affixed to the brigade's colors by Brig. Gen. Jeff Mathis, deputy commanding general of 1st Corps and acting commander of Fort Lewis.
During the ceremony, Mathis remarked on the exceptional abilities of the unit's servicemembers while deployed in Iraq and how that has continued since their return, stating, "I have the utmost respect for you all."
The 42nd MP Bde. served at Camp Bucca, near the southern Iraqi port city of Umm Qasr, from March 2008 to June 2009. While deployed, the unit oversaw operations of the world's largest theater internment facility, including the transfer of more than 43,000 detainees, the review of more than 25,000 individual detainee cases, which lead to the eventual release of more than 9,000 individuals.
In his closing remarks, Col. David P. Glaser, commander of the brigade, highlighted these achievements, but made clear that this is only one more chapter in their shared history.
"There is no doubt with the high quality of Soldiers, Airmen and civilians in this organization, that this is only one of many awards to come," he said.
