FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Northeast Indiana Base Community Council hosted its fourth annual Golf for the Warrior event at Brookwood Golf Course Sept. 20, 2024 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The goal of the event was to raise money for the NIBCC’s military support fund which aids service members in need who are assigned to bases in the northeast region of Indiana.
After a presentation of colors by the 122nd Fighter Wing Honor Guard and a stirring rendition of the national anthem by Airman Rebekka Eigenmann, services, 122nd Force Support Squadron, 36 teams of four golfers each took to their golf carts and began an 18-hole scramble. Along the way, various information tents and booths were set up featuring information about different programs and community organizations that help support veterans.
Soldiers assigned to the 1st Battalion, 293rd Regiment of the Indiana Army National Guard provided demonstration displays that included a Humvee, M2 machine gun, and an armored vehicle with a Mark 19 40 mm grenade machine gun mount.
The military appreciation spirit at the event was palpable. At one hole, golfers were offered a score incentive if they could tee off while wearing a helmet and fully loaded plate carrier weighing about 35 pounds. Not surprisingly, the players found this extremely difficult and expressed their appreciation for soldiers who regularly carry that equipment in addition to their weapon, ammunition, and more, in the course of their duties to defend the state and nation.
Last year, the NIBCC military support fund provided more than $58,000 in emergency support to service members and their families. NIBCC president Eric Huber said they expect to provide double that amount by the end of 2024.
