Members of the 55th Security Forces and Operations Support Squadrons treated children to a demonstration at the YMCA in Glenwood, Iowa on Monday, July 29, 2004.
The 55th SFS K9 team were on hand with SERE (survive, evade, resist, escape) specialists and 55th OSS aircrew equipment flight to demonstrate different military career fields to the kids.
“I’m really looking forward to the dogs,” said Stella Loder, age 9, from Glenwood. “Eating a bug, not so much.”
Airman 1st Class Tyler Stuart, 55th OSS SERE specialist, was in charge of coordinating the demonstration, which featured a K9 demonstration, camouflage face painting, bug eating, flag design, night vision scopes, and aircrew flight equipment.
“Getting involved with the community to show some aspects of the military that people don’t always see is great,” said Stuart. “Watching these kids faces light up makes it all worthwhile.”
The event was part of a summer camp held at the Glenwood YMCA as part of its “survivor week” theme during a six-week long camp. This was the fourth year that members from Offutt have participated with the camp.
“We absolutely love having them down here every year—it’s the highlight of summer camp for these kids,” said Jeannie Lorimor, YMCA youth and family director. “I hope this partnership continues for the far foreseeable future.”
