Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Installations and Facilities Ms. Brenda M. Johnson-Turner toured Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024. It’s her responsibility as the DASN I&F to advise The Honorable Meredith A. Berger, assistant secretary of the Navy, on matters related to things such as military construction, facilities sustainment, and restoration/modernization for all Marine Corps and naval installations.
Her tour was conducted as a means for MCRD San Diego’s facilities staff to provide information on the state of ongoing construction projects and facility maintenance aboard the depot.
MCRD San Diego trained more than 38,500 recruits in fiscal year ‘24. With that in mind, the importance of having facilities that can properly support not only the recruits, but also the personnel that use them, is paramount.
The biggest venture highlighted was the construction of a new recruit chow hall. The depot broke ground in February of this year and is projected to complete the 94-million-dollar project at the beginning of 2027.
“She was very interested in our new recruit chow hall,” U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joshua Owens, deputy director of facilities aboard MCRD San Diego said. “[Once completed] it will be the biggest chow hall in the Marine Corps.”
Owens continued, “She provided great feedback from her level about items we should continue pursuing. She also suggested additional opportunities to explore so we can continue to meet our mission here at MCRD San Diego.”
