In 2023, he assumed command of SISCO, HHBN, III Armored Corps.

Cpt. Pates believes those moving into a new leadership position should get to know their organization and soldiers.

Cpt. Pates states, “Learn relationships, learn people, learn their strengths and weaknesses, learn your vulnerabilities, their families, because that’s what drives a soldier.”

He believes if leadership takes the time to do this, he believes if they will understand their tools and toolkit which is their people and soldiers.

He states, “If you do that, I think you’ll be successful.”

Although Cpt. Pates feels it is “bittersweet” to leave SISCO and all the people who have supported him in his leadership role, he is excited for the next chapter in his Army career which is attending the Defensive Language Institute in Monterrey, California.

”I wish nothing but the best for Cpt. Bailey as she takes over today at SISCO, HHBN, III Armored Corps, and all my leaders here I wish them nothing but the best,” Cpt. Pates concludes.

Cpt. Bailey believes having support is essential to being a leader. She explains her husband, who is also in the U.S. Army, was unable to attend, but her three year old son was in attendance.

“It was great to have him here because one day he’ll look back at this and kind of see that he was able to be a part of this,” said Bailey.

She also believes that utilizing the leadership that surrounds her, will help lead her toward success.

Bailey said, “Leaning on my leaders and my NCO’s and my soldiers, they’re the ones who are going to drive me to success.”

As the ceremony comes to a close, a reception is held at the III Armored Corps headquarters for both parties, marking the end of one leader's time and the new commander's beginning with SISCO.
