The 911th Airlift Wing hosted an orientation flight for 15 Air Force ROTC cadets from Pennsylvania State University on Oct. 5, 2024, at Pittsburgh International Airport Air Reserve Station, giving the cadets a firsthand look at the Air Force Reserve’s aviation mission.
The cadets, who are part of Detachment 720, participated in the incentive flight aboard a C-17 Globemaster III, a versatile aircraft used at the 911th AW for rapid airlift of troops and cargo to include aeromedical evacuation. The incentive flight program is designed to educate service members and recruits about Air Force aviation, orient them to the flying mission, and recognize their dedication and hard work.
"On behalf of Detachment 720 & Penn State, I'd like to thank you for hosting our cadets at the 911th," said Col. Charles St. Sauver, Commander of Det. 720 & Professor of Aerospace Studies. "For many of them, this was their first experience with an operational Air Force Unit. I talked to a number of attendees this morning, in and out of class, and heard nothing but great things to include your intro brief. They had a fantastic time."
In addition to the flight, the cadets attended an officers’ panel, where four officers from the 911th Airlift Wing —Capt. Joshua Osborn, 911th Security Forces Squadron; Capt. Nick Brudowski, 911th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron; 1st Lt. Marjorie Schurr, 911th Airlift Wing Public Affairs; 2nd Lt. Sarah Pratt, 911th Logistics Readiness Squadron— discussed their experiences in leadership, career progression, and the unique lifestyle of Air Force Reserve service members.
At Detachment 720, cadets are trained to become effective Air Force leaders through a cadet-run structure that emphasizes leadership development, weekly classes on Air Force history and leadership principles, and hands-on experience in leadership laboratories. The detachment offers cadets opportunities to lead, innovate, and implement their ideas, preparing them for future service as Air Force officers.
Orientation flights and base tours are part of the 911th Airlift Wing’s ongoing commitment to supporting the development of future Air Force leaders and providing real-world exposure to Air Force Reserve operations.
