FORT KNOX, Ky. - In June of 2023, the Army rolled out a revamp of the Army Body Composition Program. Since June of 2024, Soldiers needing to be taped during height and weight are now taped at only a single site, the waist.
Soldiers who fail the tape test currently can request a supplement body fat assessment using the Bod Pod, Dual X-ray Absorptiometry or the InBody 770.
Candidates failing tape at the Command Assessment Program can request the InBody 770, said Sgt. Maj. Robert Garcia, the CAP senior enlisted advisor.
The Inbody 770 is a test of body composition employing painless electrical currents to achieve a highly accurate body fat percentage measurement.
“CAP was quick to take up this technology, consistent with our motto of being world class, fair and consistent,” said Garcia. “Consistency with the Army standard is what we try to make sure that we achieve every day here, so that’s why we made sure that we were able to put the InBody 770 in place so fast.”
The InBody 770 is a bioelectrical impedance analysis device. By sending electrical currents through the body, it measures not just how much of the body is composed of fat, but also how much is muscle and how much is water.
“It’s a pretty straightforward process, honestly,” said Sgt. 1st Class Cordel Foster, assistant noncommissioned officer in charge of height and weight at CAP.
To use the InBody 770, Soldiers wear ordinary physical fitness uniforms, removing their socks and shoes for the process. Candidates using the device just step onto it like a scale, and hold a sensor in each hand.
The measurement process then takes just over a minute.
“It gives you a little bit of elevator music, which I think is kind of cool,” said Foster.
Garcia said that it's vital that the measurements used by CAP are highly accurate.
“Great accuracy is important, because this is an important assessment within their Army career,” said Garcia. “We want to make sure we give those candidates every opportunity to be successful.”
When Soldiers fail the tape test at their home unit, these Soldiers typically have 60 days to conduct a supplemental body fat assessment. The CAP candidate process, however, takes place over the course of just days.
“Since height and weight are screening events at CAP, it requires us to conduct the InBody during the duration of the candidate’s assigned cohort,” Garcia said.
CAP brings candidates through their supplemental body fat assessment in just a few days, enabled by the time-efficient and easy measurements taken by the InBody 770. CAP candidates who utilize the InBody 770 come away with a highly accurate measurement of their overall body composition in hand.
“All Soldiers really benefit from the InBody 770,” said Garcia. “That way, we know where our Soldiers are on their body fat allowance, but it also gives them the opportunity to get an objective assessment of their body fat.”
Charged with assisting in selecting the leaders of tomorrow’s Army, CAP strives to ensure candidates are fit enough to lead an organization counted on to fight and win our nation’s wars.
“It’s important to have fit leaders because they’re the ones that are leading Soldiers every day,” said Garcia. They have to lead from the front; they have to be standards-based and enforce discipline, and in order to lead from the front you have to make sure you’re within those same standards.”
