    2024 Hurricane Season DoD Support

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, as communities struggle to rebuild, one moment of kindness from Spc. John Folk, of Bossier City, Louisiana, stood out. Assigned to the 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, Folk and his team were conducting a routine resupply mission when they learned that a local family had faced two consecutive years of heartache. The previous year, a family illness had canceled a young girl’s birthday celebration. Now, with their community battered by the hurricane, the young girl’s 9th birthday seemed destined to pass without celebration again.

Moved by the family’s situation, Folk knew he had to act. “We were about to leave when a lady mentioned it was her daughter’s birthday. They couldn’t celebrate the year before, and now with the hurricane, things seemed even harder. I just thought it would be nice to do something special, so I called back to leadership, and we got her a cake. It turned into a little birthday party with the kids dressed in costumes—it was a good time.”

Folk’s decision to organize a spontaneous birthday celebration was rooted in advice his mother always gave him: “Beauty in the chaos.” It was a powerful reminder that even in the most challenging circumstances, there is always room for kindness.

First Lt. Mike McBroom, Folk’s platoon leader, witnessed firsthand the impact of his soldier’s kindness. “When Spc. Folk suggested we get a birthday cake for the girl, it was absolutely heart-touching. It’s moments like these that remind us why we’re here—not just to fulfill our mission, but to connect with the community and bring hope.”

The family was overwhelmed with gratitude. “They were incredibly touched. They had been through so much,” McBroom recalled. “But for that moment, Spc. Folk, and the rest of the platoon, helped them forget about the devastation and just enjoy a little bit of happiness.”

Folk’s actions resonated deeply. Leadership often shines brightest in unexpected moments, and Folk’s thoughtfulness showed the true essence of service. “He didn’t just focus on the mission; he saw an opportunity to make someone’s day better,” McBroom said. “That’s real leadership—putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and finding a way to bring light to a dark situation.”

For Folk, the experience was simple yet profound. “It was just about uplifting their spirits, given the circumstances they were in. It was something small, but it mattered,” he said.

As the platoon continues its mission, they carry with them the knowledge that sometimes, the most important contributions they can make aren’t just through resupply efforts or route clearances, but through small acts of human kindness that resonate long after the storm has passed.
