ARLINGTON, VA – U.S. Army Central hosted 46 military land component leaders from 13 countries from around the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility at the annual Land Force Commanders Conference in Arlington, Virginia, 12 October, 2024.
Senior U.S. Army leaders from multiple organizations briefed the attendees on partnership training opportunities, near and far term planning initiatives, and various security cooperation topics. The Land Force Commanders Conference occurs the weekend before the Association of the United States Army annual meeting in Washington, D.C., in which many of the conference attendees also participated. This is the second consecutive conference.
According to Col. Chuck Canon, Chief, G3/5/7 Security Cooperation at ARCENT, this conference plays a critical role in defining the next year’s cooperation events as well as creating opportunities for future partnership.
“This was our second annual Land Force Commanders Conference,” said Canon. “Last year’s event facilitated discussions that led to multiple significant achievements in the CENTCOM region. Specifically, we presented our partners with new opportunities on which many capitalized. This year, we are hoping to build on that success by highlighting the State Partnership Program and advertising partnership training opportunities planed over the next twelve to eighteen months.”
The State Partnership Program, established in 1993, aligns state National Guard headquarters with partner nation land forces around the world. The most recent partnership in the CENTCOM region was the state of Arizona and the country of Oman in 2022. This program facilitates subject matter expert exchanges, training opportunities, and educational opportunities.
Mr. Kevin Shwedo, the Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army for South Carolina, and Brig. Gen. Joseph Sharkey, the Task Force Spartan Deputy Commanding General of Sustainment, also attended the conference. Brig. Gen. Sharkey briefed the attendees on the role of Task Force Spartan in training alongside partner nation land forces and their accomplishments over the last year.
United States Army Central is the U.S. Army Service Component Command for United States Central Command and is responsible to the Secretary of the Army for the support and administration of more than 12,000 Soldiers, including those assigned to joint task forces and embassies, across the 21 countries in the CENTCOM Area of Responsibility.
